Discipline is a tough sell, but sometimes it’s the only thing standing between you and what you want.
In this week’s episode of The 5 AM Miracle Podcast I dig into a tough subject: doing things we don’t want to do in order to get things we otherwise can’t have, achieve, or experience.
I run the trails of Nashville as often as I can, and there are many trails with forks in the road — opportunities to turn left or right, to run uphill or downhill.
I (almost always) run uphill.
I choose the harder path.
I intentionally go where I instinctively know it’s going to hurt, and hurt a lot.
Why?
Because that’s why I run.
I go where it looks more fun AND more scary at the same time — where the path I choose will certainly light me up more than anything else.
I don’t run to take the easy path, or to leisurely stroll through the park.
I run to improve myself, to grow, and to change.
I run uphill because I know that feeling, the flood of endorphins, and the stinging sensations in my legs, lungs, and head that course through my body like needles.
I know that pain, that intense rush, that triumphant moment of getting over the next hill — no matter how slow.
My trail running experiences are highlighted by moments where I overcame adversity, where I said yes to the scary mountain in front of me, and where I didn’t back down when given the choice to go home empty handed.
I run uphill on purpose because that brutal challenge is the answer I’m looking for.
The solution (to whatever problem I’m facing) is staring me right in the face, and it looks like a big scary monster waiting for me to say yes.
