Whether we realize it or not, accountability is the most important factor between us and the habit we want to secure long-term. Thanks to a new texting system called Emile, personal accountability is just a text away.
I have been writing, podcasting, and speaking about habits for years. I have promoted accountability, coached high-achievers, and hired my own coaches to keep myself on track.
However, what I always wanted was automated accountability — a tool that did not require a person and could actually shape behavior over time.
Well, I found it, and it’s such a simple way to make lasting change by just using your phone.
Productivity Begins the Night Before
As the host of The 5 AM Miracle podcast, and the author of a book by the same name, I have promoted an early morning wake-up time as one of the best ways to “dominate your day before breakfast.”
However. that’s easier said than done.
Most of us (myself included) struggle with waking up early because we struggle with getting to bed early. Life is distracting. This article is distracting if you had not planned on reading it at this moment.
If you can master ending your day on time and getting to sleep, you can easily master waking up early with plenty of high-quality sleep, putting yourself in an ideal position to dominate the day that lies before you.
Emile: Your Automated (and personal) Accountability Partner
Here’s how Emile works: you tell Emile when you want to go to bed, and then once a day you get a text that reminds you to go to bed.
The next morning Emile asks you if you went to bed on time. Depending on your answer, Emile either congratulates you or motivates you to try again.
As the days progress throughout the week you will get a breakdown of your progress. Over time you can begin to re-shape your bedtime by going to bed a little earlier, a little more often.
Within a few weeks you should easily be able to reach your ideal bedtime, and thus, achieve your ideal wake up time.
My Own Experience with Emile
I personally tried Emile for 3 weeks on a trial run a few months ago. My experience was truly remarkable.
Due to a series of projects and life events, my sleep patterns were out of whack. I was going to bed at random late hours and had lost the structure I once had.
Emile began texting me and I began responding. I set an initial goal of getting to bed by 11:30 pm just four nights per week. Then it was 11:00 pm for 3 nights, then 10:30 pm for 4 nights.
I kept adjusting and Emile followed my progress.
I was consistently impressed by the personal nature of the text messages that came through (despite the fact that I knew I was texting a machine).
I always felt like I could text real answers to the questions and get a logical response in return. That may not sound like much, but talking to an algorithm doesn’t always end up making sense in the real world.
By the end of my trial I found myself missing my daily check-ins. Though I hadn’t realized it at the time, I had grown accustomed to “someone” checking on how well I was doing.
As expected, my sleep patterns worsened after the trial and I had to find other ways to get myself back on track. This was further proof that Emile actually worked, and worked well!
