Now in the episode this week, I'll break down some of the absolute best of the best when it comes to this podcast, how you can get more value out of any podcast, and what my plans are for the future of this podcast.

Let's dig in.

The list I'm going to share with you this week is 100% subjective.

Yes, this is my list about my own show.

If you want to contribute your own opinion for the next top 10 list, email me, Jeff@JeffSanders.com.

Now let's dig right in.

These are the top 10 episodes which will cover productivity, personal growth, success habits and many more topics, and we'll start right away with, you guessed it, number one.

Number one this week is episode number 525, which is the weekly review version 5.0, how to streamline your systems for long-term success.

If you know this podcast well, you know there are a few key productivity topics that I hit on repeatedly because not only do I love them, but I personally use them, leverage them, and want the absolute best value I can extract from them, not just for myself, but for you as well.

David Allen's book, Getting Things Done, references quite a few strategies, and one of them that I stole from him, I don't know, 15 years ago now was the weekly review process.

As you can tell, the title of this one, weekly review version 5.0, I have personally gone through many different versions of my own review system, in fact, just recently I did another slight tweak to it, nothing huge, but I'm always tweaking and evolving my review because I know how important it is, and I'm not going to miss it, and I want to be able to get all the value I can from it.

So in a nutshell, a weekly review is just simply that, a review of the previous week, however, there's also the most important part, which is the plan for the upcoming week.

And so a huge part of my review is reflection, it is looking back at what happened to make sure that I know what my successes were, my failures, my aha moments, my gratitude, all these key points that I want to leverage to figure out how to make sure my next week is my best week.

So my actual review process takes around 90 minutes per week, sometimes more, sometimes less, it really depends on how deep I want to go, but I'm just really trying to get to answer a few key questions, and if I do, then I can look at my calendar for the next week and really have confidence that I have tapped into my best habits, my best responsibilities, obligations, goals, key health habits, all the things that I want to make sure are there are actually reflected in the plan for the week.

One key thing about plans is that they don't always work, plans are theoretical ideas, and a review process by definition is in hindsight, when you're looking backwards, you know exactly what happened and what did not.

So your plan for the next week is an educated guess, you're trying to figure out, based upon what I know definitely did or did not happen last week, what can I surmise would be the best possible estimation for the next seven days.

And as my week tends to go through, I will tweak and adjust and change things all the time.

My calendar is never set in stone, this is a puzzle that's always in flux.

And the review process, though it is once a week, there are lots of other smaller, tiny daily reviews, there's also much bigger review systems, monthly and quarterly and annually, lots of opportunities to be reflecting on the past and planning for the future.

The entire point of all of this is intentionality, it is self-awareness, it is being fully in touch with your entire life, personal, professional, all your goals, all your systems, all your checklists, your tools and resources, your calendar and your task manager.

Everything is up for grabs when it comes to a review.

Now you don't want to overwhelm yourself, the goal there is not to do it all.

My goal with my review process is to ask and answer very specific questions that are the most important, that are the biggest hinges to swing the biggest doors.

And when that's true, then I can tap into my most important habits, my most important goals, and the rest I just ignore.

So for you to go through a process of, let's say, 90 minutes a week to really review what happened and plan for the next week, I would challenge you to really be reflective in the first half, to really tap into what happened, but spend the majority of your time on the plan.

Most of your time should be spent on really dialing in on what to do next, your next action.

Where are you in your certain projects?

Where are you in your health goals?

And based on that, what's the next most logical step to take?

When will it happen?

Where will it happen?

How will it happen?

Do you have your ducks in a row?

And that's going to make the next week more smooth because you've already figured it out.

It's similar to having a meal plan for the week and saying, you know, on Sunday afternoons, I will prepare some stuff so on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday, I can just eat that food right away.

It was already done.

There's nothing to think about.

There's no considerations.

That plan was already made.

That's the idea.

Like, let's smooth the path, remove the obstacles so the week can flow smoothly.

When that's true, you will get more done.

You will have less stress.

You will feel better and it will double down on itself and you'll want to do more reviews to get more success down the road.

So I cannot stress enough how important it is to really have your best review system.

So episode number 525 of this podcast.

Listen to it.

Dial it.

If you want to go back to previous ones, you can.

But I would argue that one will get you started.

Give you the best foundation.

And of course, read David Allen's book, Getting Things Done.

That will give you an even more detailed breakdown of a lot of great systems.

Number two this week is episode number 378 called Five Healthy Habits to Reset Your Over-Programmed Life.

Stress and overwhelm are without question our greatest enemies.

If your goal is to be healthy and productive, which is the point of this podcast, I hope you're here for those reasons, then you're going to want to dial in to your five or maybe your top 10 or top 50 healthiest habits to really tap into your greatest potential.

And it's most important to understand the healthy habits that have the greatest value for you when you feel over-programmed.

If you feel stressed, if you feel overwhelmed, if the emotional state that you carry into the next day is one of exhaustion or fear or just or regrets, any of these negative emotions and feelings and descriptors, if those describe you on a regular basis, you're going to need essentially an intervention, something to break that cycle and get yourself tapped into your greatest self.

I just recently spent some time back in nature doing some hikes here on the trails in Nashville where I live.

And one of the things I took away from these three days in a row of some real quality time in the woods was just how much I need that time, just how stressed I have been.

It's one of those where if you don't take some time to step away, you can miss the grind that you're in.

It's really hard to see yourself.

We need to be able to step away and to have some of your healthiest habits to remind you to do that or to prevent you from going down that slippery slope of stress and overwhelm.

The key here is to define for yourself what those will be.

Now in the episode, Yes, I described five healthy habits I think are great, but it's your life.

It's your choice.

I know for me that when I go to the woods and I spend time hiking and trail running, it is my best healthy habit.

Without question, it's the one habit I want to guarantee aside from great sleep.

That's it.

I want to be in the woods.

And I know that that for me really checks that box.

But for you, either you may not have access to it or may not care about it.

Well, the goal here is customization.

Make your list.

Know what those things are.

And then before you get stressed out, before you're overwhelmed, build these healthy habits in to make sure that you stay that way, not stressed and not overwhelmed.

But of course, if you are, if that defines your life, then the need to break that cycle is more real than you could possibly imagine because burnout is coming.

I've been there.

I know what it's like to have panic attacks, to go to the ER for a possible heart attack.

I've been down that road.

It's a scary one.

It's a dangerous one.

It's a destructive one.

And so that's kind of worst case scenario stuff.

But you can avoid that and you can really thrive and have a great life if your healthy habits are baked in and are essentially guarantees.

And so we back up just one episode here to the weekly review process.

When you review your last week, you could ask the question, well, how many workouts did I have?

How much sleep did I get?

How many times did I meditate, etc., etc.

But of course, the most important question is, what does this upcoming week look like in terms of your health?

Are your healthy habits baked in in the way that you want them to be?

If not, make sure that is one of your top priorities in your review because that's going to define your energy, your enthusiasm, your ability to do the things you set out to do will come from the fact that you are healthy enough to do them.

That's why health is the number one focus of this podcast as a lead into productivity.

Without health, there is no productivity.

Let's make that very clear.

You need to be healthy.

It is the number one requirement.

So focus on it.

Make sure that is a priority for you each and every week.

And number three on our list this week is episode number 420.

You become what you think about most of the time.

Honestly, this is like the subtitle to the subtitle to this podcast.

I am a huge fan of personal growth and the personal development movement that essentially in the modern sense began a few decades ago with Earl Nightingale.

He was this very famous radio host.

It has all kinds of awards and records for selling the most number of albums.

And he has this iconic voice.

And he recorded this record called The Strangest Secret.

If you have not heard it, go back, find it online, listen to it.

It is life changing stuff.

But the core message is you become what you think about.

Whatever your thoughts are becomes you.

And the way that I tend to view this is that even before our thoughts, we have our inputs.

That's really the core of everything.

What comes into our mind will then impact what we think about.

And what we think about will then determine our actions, which determine our habits, which then determine our results.

That's the basic through line here, the flow of everything.

Things come into your life.

We think about things.

We act on these thoughts.

We have recurring thoughts and actions and habits.

And then we get results from all of those.

So the message that I have been trying to essentially communicate from day one here on this podcast is that personal growth matters.

That your ability to see what success could be.

The progressive realization of a worthy ideal.

Also a definition I stole from Earl Nightingale.

Success is just simply making progress towards the things that we want.

And the question becomes, well first of all, what do you want?

And you can figure that out by knowing yourself.

And all of this plays together in this entire bubble of thinking about things that we want and how to get them.

And then over time, everything in our life, all of our results, positive and negative, everything is a direct result of us.

What comes into our life, how we process those experiences and those consumables.

And then we think, we act, we have habits and then we get results.

It's all connected.

And from my experience, the thought process behind this, this realization that we become what we think about is a challenge.

It's a challenge to think better and to think about better things.

Knowing that those inputs and those experiences change us.

They evolve us from the inside out.

And so if you want bigger results, if you want to achieve bigger goals, if you want to become a bigger, better version of yourself, change what you think about.

Change your podcast you listen to, your audio books, the books that you read, the TV shows that you watch, the job that you have 9 to 5 every day.

Change your life.

But do so first with how your brain functions.

Think about new things and you will get new and hopefully better results.

Number 4 on the list is episode number 539 called "Full Immersion" How to Overwhelm Obstacles with Abundant Solutions.

There was a quote that I heard years ago from Marie Forleo who is a very famous online personality, business owner, entrepreneur.

And a phrase that I stole from her is that everything is figureoutable, which I love.

Which is a challenge to say, "Can I do this?

Yes I can.

Here's a problem, I have a solution.

Here's an issue, I can figure it out.

Everything is figureoutable."

And the episode that I dig into "Full Immersion", the perspective that I take on big problems especially, not just small ones, which you could also do, but the big ones.

Is we have to overwhelm them with abundant solutions.

We have to hit this thing from a thousand different angles and when we do, we solve the problem.

One tendency that a lot of us have, myself included, is to take a big problem and we'll take a stab at it.

We'll try one strategy, one time.

And then when it fails, because it probably will, we quit.

Hands in the air, walk away.

It's not enough effort, it's not enough perspective.

We didn't overwhelm that obstacle with abundant solutions.

We just kind of halfway tried one thing and then stopped.

If your goal is to lose weight and you have one healthy meal today and then you wonder why you didn't lose weight.

One meal is not enough.

We're going to have to eat a lot more than that and get good sleep and work out well.

There's a lot more to it.

And so that becomes the challenge is to figure out what are these big obstacles we're trying to overcome.

And then we figure out all the potential solutions.

And then we start going through them one by one in a methodical way.

And then over time, we actually do solve the problem.

We achieve the goal.

We got there over a longer time frame, most likely.

But we got there because we didn't quit.

We got there because we overwhelmed that problem with all of these possible solutions.

We tackled the health issue with our diet, with exercise, with stress management, with great sleep, with awesome community.

And on and on and on.

That's where the phenomenal results come from.

Is you tackled it from every angle.

So drown the problem.

That's the idea.

Drown the problem with all these solutions and you will be able to fully immerse whatever is happening with this great possibility, this potential for success.

So to learn more about that, Episode 539 goes into more detail on it.

But it is one of the concepts that I just I can't get away from myself because I know how big scary problems can be or how scary big problems can be.

Both are true and we need to have better solutions available.

So figure that out.

Fully immerse it.

Drown the problem.

Number 5 is Episode number 394, what it really takes for massive goal achievements with gym heuling.

This is the first interview that I featured here on this list.

I have done hundreds and hundreds of interviews.

I just pulled out a couple this week on this list.

But this one stood out to me mostly because of Jim's just ridiculously positive personality.

I reviewed my list of all the episodes of my podcast trying to pull out the best ones.

And certain episodes just stand out to me as an experience that I had that was really positive.

And Jim Heuling is just so positive.

He's just so uplifting.

And you may think that I'm one of those people as well because I try to be here on this show.

But I don't think Jim is trying.

I think he just is.

And so when you surround yourself with positive people like Jim Heuling as an example or others, you find yourself becoming like them.

And so the episode, the interview with Jim, yeah it's about goal achievement.

It's about taking big steps forward.

But the lesson that I pull, the one that I think actually matters the most, is to surround yourself with people who inspire you.

To surround yourself with people you want to be like.

You want to emulate their charisma, their personality, their discipline.

You want to be like them.

That will make you like them.

It does happen.

Our environment, not just the physical environment, but the people we are around, they shape us.

They mold us into our future selves for better or for worse.

And if you don't have awesome people around you, then that is the challenge.

Go get those awesome people.

Go bring them near you.

Go be wherever they are.

Go to them.

And you will get the results from them.

So yes, the interview with Jim is awesome.

There are others to dig into as well.

But once again, the lesson here, awesome people is the answer for you to also be awesome.

Number six is episode number 522, The Magic of Self Coaching.

How to take back control and solve your own problems.

I am definitely one of those typical Americans, especially, who have this I'll do it myself attitude.

Of the I don't need somebody else to counter what I just talked about of surround yourself with awesome people.

I tend to be the opposite.

I tend to take the angle of if I have a problem, I will solve it.

Because, and this is the key part to this, I already know the answer.

I'm just not doing it.

Whenever I think about hiring a coach or seeing some kind of expert for some kind of advice in any area of my life, my very first question is, am I doing the things I already know I should be doing?

And if the answer is no, I go do those things first before I seek out expert advice.

Now, you can still go get expert advice.

You can still hire coaches and see doctors and get experts to give you opinions.

However, the magic of self coaching, that concept comes from the idea that we already know the answer.

We already know what to do.

We're just not doing it.

This is an execution problem, not a knowledge problem.

This is a discipline and scheduling question, nothing else.

And if you're looking for a solution to your problem, you probably already know a dozen things you could do to address it.

So you just simply start there.

Take the action, do the thing, coach yourself into that action.

And then if you try that and it doesn't happen to work, of course, go get some expert advice.

That's never going to be a bad thing.

Unless hiring somebody else is an excuse to not do the thing you already know you should be doing, I cannot tell you how many times that I have hired someone just to confirm I already knew the right answer.

So if you're looking for that sense of self initiative, the get up and go attitude of saying, I want to take control of my life because at the end of the day, you are the best solution for your problems.

That's the thing here.

That's the reality of all of this.

No one else cares about you more than you do.

So if you want results, you are the coach, you are the CEO of your own life.

And to embrace that, to embody that both for the good and the bad, the best results and the worst, all together comprehensively, that is an opportunity.

It's responsibility, but it's also an opportunity to be that solution.

And of course, part of that solution is to hire awesome people and surround yourself with them.

But your life is your choice.

This is your challenge.

Number seven is actually two episodes, numbers 433 and 434.

They play together really well as a combo pack here.

And so those are called Life as an Amateur, the Power of Fear and Finally Turning Pro.

And the next one is called Confront Resistance, Reject Self-Doubt and Win the War of Art.

If you know those keywords I just said, you know that I'm referencing Steven Pressfield.

He is a very famous author and screenwriter and creative person who has written some phenomenal books, a lot of which are fiction and then a lot of which are phenomenal self-help books that really tap into essentially the artists challenges that we as artists face.

But also all of us being artists, all of us being amateurs who want to turn pro, all of us who want to reject self-doubt and confront our problems.

And finally, ultimately, this is the big lesson, sit your butt in the chair and do the work.

I summarize all the lessons that Steven has taught me over the years through his books.

And that's the one line that stands out more than all the others.

Sit your butt in the chair and do the work.

The work of professionals is essentially a proactive, intentional, disciplined approach.

So one of Steven's points that he makes many times in his books is that the difference between an amateur and a professional is that the amateur is waiting.

They're always waiting for inspiration, success, someone else to come in and solve their problems.

They're in a stance of just, I hope I get what I want.

Versus a professional that says, in order to get what I want, I have to go do the thing.

Sit my butt in the chair and do the work.

If I want inspiration, I'm going to sit my butt in the chair and go get inspired.

If I want success in some area, I'm going to go pursue it.

Confronting that reality is, in essence, what Steven is arguing through all of his work.

Is that we as people, as goal achievers, high achievers, artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, as people with goals, we want those finish lines.

We want to get there.

But we only get there through the work.

We don't get there by waiting.

We don't get there by hoping.

We don't get there by sitting around.

We get there through action.

And I love Steven's work.

It is aggressive, it is intense, it is in your face.

And it is the breath of fresh air that we all need.

I need all the time to remind me that that's reality.

That when I have excuses, when I don't want to do something, when I'm waiting for something, that's just not it.

Nope.

I've got to go back to the drawing board, back to the fundamentals, and sit my butt in the chair and do the work.

Number 8 is episode number 424, which actually plays very well with the last ones I just discussed.

This one's called Extreme Intensity, an Uncommon Success, and David Goggins Can't Hurt Me.

David Goggins, if you don't know him, is one of the most intense human beings on planet Earth.

Talk about discipline.

Holy cow.

He is off the charts.

His book is the first one.

It's called Can't Hurt Me.

And in this episode, 424, I review my experience reading this book and what I pull from it.

And I can't even begin to express how impactful David's work has had on my life.

I have followed him for years.

I have watched videos of him online.

I've read his materials.

I love his message.

As crazy as it is, as wild as it is, David Goggins reminds me that I can do so much more.

And that hard work is not optional.

That for excellence to be achieved, discipline is required.

And he has done some of those wild things on planet Earth.

He has lived a crazy life, one of extreme poverty, extreme abuse.

He has a very dark past.

And he turned that into this insane amount of discipline and ultimate success in so many areas of life.

And so, yes, he is raw.

He is extreme.

He is explicit.

He will challenge you in a lot of ways, but he can't be ignored.

He is one of those people that I cannot walk away from.

As flawed as he may be in certain areas, he is someone I have to learn from, someone I want to learn from, and then emulate to the best of my abilities.

So if you want to learn more about that, his book, Can't Hurt Me, is a great place to start.

Or episode number 424.

Number 9 is episode number 557, called Dedicated Space.

Guaranteeing progress by showing up where the work gets done.

In terms of productivity, this is one of my favorite strategies.

It's one that I kind of recently really doubled down on.

And it stems from this simple concept that your physical space, your environment, will dictate your results.

Now I did mention that previously with our conversation around the people that surround you will influence you, but your physical space does as well.

And the example that I tend to use all the time is, if you want to get a great workout in, well, you go to the gym.

You don't workout in your office, you don't workout in the bathroom, you workout where people workout.

And when you do, you're going to also workout.

You're going to get the exercise in, you're going to get the results from that time.

And the point of this is to craft intentional and customized dedicated spaces for those core habits that you want to achieve each and every day.

Whether that's working at the office, great healthy habits, family time, whatever it is, the dedicated space is going to guarantee first and foremost that you're blocking distractions, the things that would stop you from doing it, but then also things that encourage you to do the activity you came to do.

So a simple example, if you want to workout, you go to the gym with your gym bag, wearing gym clothes, you have your resources, you have your time set aside to do the workout, and then when you're there, you're going to workout.

It's going to happen, right?

It guarantees the progress.

And that's the whole point.

We customize these spaces because we want the guarantee, that sense of confidence to say, "I put this thing on my calendar and it will get done."

It's not optional, it's not a maybe, I am guaranteeing success in that arena, as long as nothing ridiculous happens to stop me, it will happen.

So that's the goal.

You build and customize these dedicated spaces, you put them on your calendar so you know what work is going to get done, and most importantly, where you're going to be to do it.

And when that is dedicated, when that is defined, and that is planned for in advance, your success is all but guaranteed.

And finally, that brings us to number 10 this week, which is a triplicate, three episodes.

Numbers 255, 256, and 426.

All of these have a common theme, which you'll hear with these titles.

Fertility, IVF, and making babies.

And then also, pregnancy and our wild birth story.

And also, another wild birth story, and finding balance in a growing family, all with my wife, Tessa Sanders.

If you have not heard these episodes, please listen to them.

They are awesome.

They're just so much fun.

Tessa and I have some of the craziest birth stories you will ever encounter.

And I know that's really subjective.

There's probably wilder ones than ours, but we have some weird ones.

We just do.

And we go through all kinds of stuff.

Yes, fertility challenges, IVF issues, of course our kind of off-the-grid decision to have midwives and giving birth in the woods.

It gets weird.

It's off the chain.

But it's a lot of fun.

You will learn a ton about not just Tessa and I and our family, but also a lot about options that you may have with a growing family and delivering babies.

And there's a lot to it.

It's a ton of fun.

It's a big part of the personal side of this podcast, and one that I probably don't touch on often enough.

But my wife is an awesome person who's done amazing things, especially with her very intentional approach to giving birth and being pregnant in a way that was healthy and beautiful for her and all of us.

So once again, if you want to hear all of those stories, it's episodes 255, 256 and 426.

I want to wrap this up with a couple of key points here.

The first being how you can get more value out of any podcast that you hear.

The first key thing to any great consumable, any area you want to learn.

It could be a book, a podcast, an audiobook.

It is to be selective.

Don't listen to everything.

Just don't.

There's way too much out there.

Most of it will not apply to you.

Not worth your time.

The best option is to cherry pick the ones that are best for you.

That's why I did this top 10 list.

I want you to be able to find the best of the best because I'm very well aware.

You're not going to hear them all.

There's way too many.

I'm not going to hear them all.

And I recorded them.

So you need to be really selective here on each episode that you want to dig into for any podcast you subscribe to.

Number two, go back and re-listen to your favorite episodes on repeat.

This is a strategy that I have not tapped into enough and when I do it, I'm blown away.

You will always extract new and interesting nuances from the best content.

So if you go back and re-listen to your favorites, you will learn new things and in new ways.

And you will hear things you miss the first time around.

So be sure to re-listen to the best stuff because that's where you're going to get the most value.

Third strategy here is to diversify your selection of inputs.

One of the best ways that we grow as people, our personal growth strategies, needs to be centered around this idea that we can't just pigeonhole ourselves in one key area.

I love the idea of focus and I love the idea of being really selective with I'm going to grow in this area and then learn in a very direct way.

However, as a grand kind of umbrella concept to growth itself, our lives need to be diversified with new inputs, new people, new experiences to open us up to new possibilities.

This kind of plays into my concept of crunch and release and with that the crunch is the work.

That's the focus, we dig in, we really figure out what we're doing and we're in the moment, we're grinding.

But the release is the big step back.

It's the strategy, it's the big picture thinking, it's the brainstorming, it's the reading of new books, it's diversification of ideas, we're really opening up our possibilities.

And then we make a new plan and we go back and we crunch again.

So that crunch and release is that rhythm of life, the dig in and step back.

And the step back is the chance to really open your mind to what's possible.

Step four is to break out of your regular listening habits on a consistent basis.

So this plays into number three.

We need to make sure that when we're listening to stuff, we are listening and engaging in new ways.

One way I love to learn is with a physical book where I have a notebook and a pen and a highlighter and it's like a workbook style, like real college study session of dig in, memorize, learn things, full engagement.

But I also like to try new ways to learn.

I'll listen to a podcast while I'm out for a walk or while I'm running on the trails or I'm at the gym lifting weights.

Like I try new things in new ways to see how it works.

And I definitely see myself changing and listening in different ways based upon my habits.

So if you've not tapped into how to become a better podcast listener, there are ways to do it.

Like I myself am a podcast consumer of lots of great shows.

So I'm there with you.

I know what this is like and I know what it's like to get a better experience from my shows.

So mix it up.

Try new things.

Finally, number five in this area to really tap into your best shows is to provide intentional feedback to your favorite podcasters or your favorite authors of the books you read.

I'll say this as a podcaster and author myself.

We want to hear from you.

We want to know what your thoughts are.

And so if you share your feedback and your input to people, they are listening.

And they will change what they're doing to suit you, to customize what they're creating for you.

And that sounds wacky, but it's so true.

Very few people actually directly contact me because they basically assume I'm not going to listen.

That I'm not going to read it.

I'm not going to care.

Nope.

Totally wrong.

I definitely will read your email.

I will listen to your feedback.

I will take it seriously and I will almost always do something about it.

Now that's just me as a person, how I operate, but a lot of people are like that.

So if you want to provide feedback and dig in, I highly encourage you to do so.

Because people are listening and they want to hear from you.

And for our last topic this week, let's discuss my plans for the future of this show.

First of all, I'm still here and I plan to stay here for as long as I can making amazing content here on this podcast.

Let's get to that final action step before I forget.

There we go.

And here's that action step.

I know this podcast has a lot of content.

So filtering any database down to the best content is helpful to save you time and squeeze out the most value.

And I really do hope you've been enjoying this show.

And I'm looking forward so much to making even more top 10 lists in the future.

So yes, subscribe to this podcast and your favorite podcast app.

Of course, go to 5ammiraclepremium.com for the best content there.
